Formed in 2006, En Karma began as group of friends who came together with one mutual goal in mind: to create music that people would love dancing to, as much as the band loved playing it. The line up consists of Nick Chowlia on keys, Pip Dhaliwal on drums, Ricky Thinda on bass guitar, Karm on Dhol and Inder Kooner, the bands vocal horsepower. En Karma is North America’s pre-eminent Bhangra band and their combined musical pedigree traverses experiences with the top bands of the 80’s Bhangra movement in the UK, the oldest folk Bhangra institutions in Canada, and a little bit of indie-rock sensibility thrown in for good measure. En Karma is a distinct and unmatched commodity in the Bhangra industry. The only Punjabi band in North America, En Karma’s members deliver musicianship and performance abilities without compare. Drawing on their UK influences for live band arrangements and infused with their more contemporary influences in Vancouver, En Karma has created a unique Bhangra sound that is all their own.
Aidan Mayes & Mandy Cole
Smooth harmonies, heartfelt lyrics, and playful guitar are the main ingredients that make up this grounded, inspiring, and talented duo, and now Aidan Mayes and Mandy Cole are starting to see all their hard work pay off. 2014 was a landmark year for the twosome as they not only stunned a sold out crowd at the world renowned Dream Café in their hometown of Penticton, BC, but they also landed on festival bills alongside 54-40, City and Colour, Mother Mother, The Current Swell and Yukon Blonde. These two singer-songwriters now have their eyes turned to bigger and better. In 2015, they’ll develop material for a full-length album to follow their successful debut EP “Hello Hercules,” which includes the award winning original song, “Expecting Fireworks.” Though awards are nothing new to this pair, the accolades continue to pile up both locally, in the form of the “Best Music” prize at the Penticton Arts Awards, and nationally as finalists in CBC’s Searchlight 2014 competition; yet their unpretentious, friendly and down-to-earth demeanors remain. It is this “true to themselves” attitude that best describes the truly soulful and powerful sound of Aidan Mayes and Mandy Cole. They hope you’ll find listening to their music as uplifting and rejuvenating as making it has been for them.
Ari Neufeld is a hell bent on creativity, in constant search of the authentic, which is really hard to find in a modern age saturated with cliche and photocopied art. You will find Neufeld attempting ambitious heights of rhythm and melody in his one man band act that feels familiar, because it carries the ancestry of Canadiana folk music, and yet it is unique amalgam of old and modern tricks, aimed at the core of your romantic being, making you feel things like laughter in the midst of loss, and pleasure in spite of pain. Pay attention to his feet as well as his voice and hands, for he creates music with his whole being!
Wild Son is comprised of the funkiest drummer/bassist combination locked in with a high energy violinist, progressive pianist and a catchy singer-songwriter identity. The band has released a 4 track EP in January 2013 and are set to release a full length album in the summer of 2015. “Build the Future” has been made available for free download, and is the lead single off Wild Son’s self-titled album. Over the past few years, Wild Son has firmly established themselves as one of Kelowna’s most popular bands. They began as a two-piece acoustic group and have recently added their latest member, Eric Disero, to establish a five-piece band. The talented funk/folk rock group make high-quality, groove infused tunes that leave their fans wanting more. Living together on Okanagan Lake has given them the means to explore their artistic capabilities to the fullest.
My Kind of Karma
My Kind of Karma (MKOK) was stamped into existence in June of 2012 leaving their mark on the regulars of Kelowna’s intimate music scene. Sharing the same home town of Bowmanville Ontario, each member moved to Kelowna BC at different times, for different reasons, but were brought together by the creative force of Music. Since releasing their debut album “Sweet Wild Life” on August 3rd, 2013 they have toured to the GTA and back twice, opening for bands such as Blue Rodeo and Illscarlett. MKOK has performed alongside other notable acts such as: Jon and Roy, Paperboy and the Messengers, Tiger Moon, Wild Son, Floyd Meets Brown, The Dudes, Blue King Brown, Joshua Smith, Bestie, and more. My Kind of Karma is currently working on their sophomore studio album back at Music City Studios in Kelowna, BC with owner Mike Pedersen (engineer/co-producer for “Sweet, Wild Life”). The release date is still TBA but is likely to be sometime in fall of 2015.
